"INSTRU-VOCAL” ARTICULATION OF DRUMS, BASS & BRASS  
Teacher - Bob Stoloff
Students in Level 2 will  learn how to articulate contemporary drumbeats with advanced percussive embellishments, cutting-edge big band brass articulations and progressive bass lines in a variety of musical styles using complex rhythmic patterns, advanced tonguing techniques and applied vocabulary for each of these instruments.

SCAT SINGING   Teacher - Bob Stoloff
Using call-response, phrase spacing technique and prescribed melodic patterns , Bob will teach advanced scat singing techniques including  embellished scalar and arpeggio configurations over II-V's,  diminished, half-diminished, augmented and altered dominant seventh chords. Participants will continue to practice Bob’s “Recipes” and learn how to improvise over challenging harmonic chord progressions using phraseology techniques including motivic modulation, contrary motion, rhythmic displacement ,  and other compositional devices. Additionally, level-2 students will practice navigating transcribed solos recorded and performed by a collection of notable vocal and instrumental artists.

RHYTHMANIA!    Teacher - Bob Stoloff
Students will  develop a unique rhythmic vocabulary by articulating advanced syncopated rhythmic figures and patterns using Bob’s comprehensive lexicon of instru-vocal syllables. Participants will explore in depth the nuances of jazz, pop, R&B, blues, funk, swunk and shuffle in even and swing feels. Latin styles will be reviewed by examining the rhythmic ingredients that fuel Bossa Nova, Samba, Baion, Mambo, Songo, Guaguanco and Afro-Cuban grooves.

GROUP IMPROVISATION GAMES   Teacher - Bob Stoloff
Bob’s unique approach to group improvisation teaches singers how to create music by weaving together spontaneous rhythmic, melodic and harmonic motifs. Group Improvisation Games offers a diverse palette of musicianship skills to the a cappella vocal ensemble including composition, tonality, harmony, dynamics, meter, instru-vocal articulation, motivic development, group blending, choreography and how to improvise using text. In addition, participants will develop confidence in their own intuitive musicality while learning about building community through both cooperation and leadership. The work deepens with the addition of background rhythm section tracks to provide rhythmic and harmonic scaffolds for vocal team improvisation. Emphasis on time feels, musical styles, groove variations and spontaneous composition.
 
STAGE PERFORMANCE/LEAD SHEET ARRANGING  Teacher - Bob Stoloff
This course offers comprehensive and experiential training to singers interested in performing with rhythm section accompanists. Level-2 stage performance curriculum emphasizes written lead sheet arranging in addition to verbal communication of ensemble cues, intros, endings, time feels and instrumental comping patterns in all contemporary styles of music. Singers interested in solo performance will  learn how to be effective and successful bandleaders and all participants will  have the opportunity to apply their learned expertise in the final culminating Jazz Vocal Academy concert.        





THEORICAL-PRACTICAL HARMONY

PRACTICAL HARMONY - Practicing the theorical rules using piano and voice, melody architectural model based on chords that originate from the major ionian, melodic minor and harmonic minor scales harmonization.
ANALYSIS - Analysis of the song changes and connection to the melodies
COMPOSITION - Simple songs composition, starting from a stated harmonic progression
ARRANGEMENT - Small combo organization and individual parts writing

VOCAL TECHNIQUE FOR  JAZZ SINGERS
Teacher - Stefania Patanè
EVT Certified Master Teacher

Stefania is a jazz singer and educator and Certified Master Teacher of the renown Estill Voice Training, an original training model approved by voice scientists and artists all over the world for its unique effectiveness in voice control, created by the researcher and singer Jo Estill.

In Level Two, Stefania will analyze some advanced aspects of vocal technique, and she will provide more complex ear-training exercises. The Vocal Training exercises will support the study of Bob Stoloff’s topics, stage performance, and will further your understanding of compositions, patterns and solos from essential vocal jazz recordings. The goal is to improve the control of the voice as an instrument in jazz.

Stefania approfondirà alcuni aspetti avanzati della tecnica vocale, e fornirà più complessi esercizi riguardo l’allenamento dell’ear training attraverso il canto. Gli esercizi di Vocal Training serviranno da supporto per la pratica dei vari esercizi di improvvisaizone dei corsi di Bob Stoloff , per la performance e per lo studio di composizioni, pattern e solo estrapolati da alcune delle incisioni emblematiche della storia del jazz . Obiettivo: l’acquisizione di maggiore padronanza dell’uso strumentale della voce nel jazz.
