Rehearsals:
Sunday evenings
Held each weekend of the Vocal Jazz Academies, Levels 1 & 2
Concerts
Level One: Saturday night of the final weekend (schedule)
Level Two: Friday night of Weekend 4 and Saturday night of the final weekend (schedule)

Members of The Creative Vocal Ensemble are expected to come prepared to rehearsals.
Scores, mp3s and assignments will be available from the website. It is the students'  responsibility to check the schedule for detailed information about assignments and to come to rehearsals prepared.

Final Weekend Concert:  For both levels, there will be a final concert Saturday evening with rehearsals Friday afternoon and evening.  The Friday afternoon session on the final weekend is an opportunity to review your parts with the support of a pianist.  This accompanist is not going to play individual parts but rather allow singers the opportunity to HEAR their vocal line along with the other sections, in order to provide support so you can deliver your part with confidence in the evening session with Bob that follows.

Level 2 Special Concert:  There will be a special concert on Friday of the 4th weekend (Friday March 4), with a rehearsal Thursday with a select group of singers.

Singers should rehearse on their own time before rehearsals. The mp3s available on the website can support this learning or you can learn yourself in any way you prefer.

about the ensemble

Bob Stoloff’s Creative Vocal Ensemble is a unique project designed to train singers how to blend, articulate, harmonize and improvise by performing classic jazz ensemble arrangements. Participants will learn the fundamentals of ensemble singing and receive expert coaching in
  • style interpretation,
  • stage presence,
  • group dynamics,
  • jazz and traditional articulation,
  • visual presentation and
  • stage performance skills.
In addition, singers will receive musicianship training in the art of spontaneous group improvisation by applying techniques songwriters use to compose vocal and instrumental music. This specialized training will instruct vocalists how to correlate spontaneous instru-vocal themes created by smaller designated sections within the group. This teamwork strategy underlines the intention of a musical cooperative, similar to the interaction of string, woodwind, brass and percussion sections in an ensemble. Each section adds to the composition by contributing complimentary rhythm, harmony, counterpoint and other essential musical components.

Participants will have fun learning non-verbal communication hand cues and how to incorporate theatre techniques, body movement and a unique rendition of vocalese called “text improvisation.” The Creative Vocal Ensemble will
  • nurture intuitive musical skills,
  • encourage risk-taking,
  • build confidence and
  • ease performance anxiety.
Singers who would like to receive certification for Bob Stoloff's Vocal Jazz Academies must participate in both the Creative Vocal Ensemble and the weekend Jazz Academy workshops.  If you would like just to sing and gain vocal jazz ensemble experience, you are welcome to sign up for the vocal ensemble only.
