Canzona For Vocal Brass: Note for note, this is actually Canzona per Sonare #2, a lovely contrapuntal piece written for brass quartet by 16th century Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli. I recorded a vocal rendition to commemorate my earlier days as a classical trumpet player at the High School of Performing Arts in New York City. My intention was to emulate the traditional timbres and articulations of various brass instruments. While the trumpet parts came out a bit too vocal, the French horn and tuba timbres are pretty accurate. In fact, to “beef-up” the tuba, we electronically added an octave below. It sounded so real my engineer (Denis Rock) and I used an oscilloscope to compare the wavelengths of a real tuba with our enhanced vocal version. They were almost identical!
